Character development in School

MORALITY IN THE MODERN SCHOOL SYSTEM; DEAD OR ALIVE?

Introduction

Permit me to open with this quote as my key to this short article. "EDUCATION without MORALS, is preparing a NUISANCE for the SOCIETY''. The primary focus of the school administrator  now is his or her money, nothing else. They are ready to do anything to improve his or her financial statement yearly. However, this has zero attention to the moral and character development of the students, which has a major impact on the society at large.

Schools enact rules that make teachers handicapped when it comes to student discipline. Not knowing, this has a greater impact on students' academic performance and overall outcome of a child's moral behaviour in the society he lives. This is why, cultism, kidnapping, rape, corruption is on the rise in our society everyday.

What is Morality?

Morality:- is the principle concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behaviour. Regardless of the context, we all know what Morality means

Types of Morality

A branch of moral philosophy called normative ethics. Answers the question of what we ought to do. Normative ethics focuses on providing a framework for deciding what is right and wrong. Three common frameworks are deontology, utilitarianism, and virtue ethics.

The above mentioned have been downplayed, both in school and at home thus , making the society vulnerable in the hands of immoral products.

  • Imagine an international school fully engaged in examination malpractice where students must either join or be ostracized.

  • Imagine a situation where a teacher can not discipline a student because of the political status of his or her parents.

  • Imagine a school of international standard where students are always right and teachers wrong just because of how much income the students bring to the table in form of school fees. While the teacher is considered a liability as regards his or her wages and salary.

  • Imagine how vulnerable a teacher becomes, when he or she is sacked because he disciplined a learner for wrongdoing and the parent threatened to remove his or her child if the teacher is not sacked.

  • Imagine a generation where students look at teachers as less than their class.

Now, imagine such children in political, private or public offices. What do you think will be the end result?

  • Corruption, public funds, palliative embezzlement

  • No accountability or transparency

  • Colleagues harassment and disrespect for hierarchy.

  • Underperformance

  • Kidnapping etc

Conclusion

In conclusion, HFU may be establishing a national award winning prize for students of good morals annually. Each state will have one representative considered to be of good moral/character development. This will go a long way in helping our society transform from the dead end of moral and character decay.

Also, school outreaches will be conducted on developing learners morally for the good of the society.

Thank you.
